Panorama

The BBC News called, but I ignored them, then the Panorama show called, and I figured I might attend – and use it as a political platform. I called them back, and would get there for 6pm.

Pat and Dingle drove me, it was not far, and I had on a new shirt, new suit, clean socks and pants, but I looked exactly the same. Yet smelt better.

After make-up, mic tested, I checked my teeth, checked myself in the mirror with a shrug, and on I went and sat, just the two of us, no audience.

The intro music sounded out, then the camera light came on for Jeremy Paxman. ‘With us tonight, and fresh back from turning New York upside down again, is Ricky Roskov.’

He turned to me, second camera now showing green.

‘Ricky, every time you visit New York they try hard to kill you, people hurt. Would it not be wise to just stay away?’

‘If I do that … then first my business interests would be harmed, second … the cabal wins and they scare me off, and third … the people of New York would miss my charm and wit.’

I held a straight face as he shot me a look.

‘You did two walk-on roles in popular sitcoms…’

‘Yes, and both were surreal, in that I played myself walking into a hotel and causing a stir as I try to book in.’

He cocked an eyebrow. ‘Very surreal, art imitating life in an extreme form. And you did check into a hotel, and they were probably terrified, so life and art mixing, yes. And who was after you this time?’

‘I have no idea, and I didn’t see much of it, the FBI kept my head down in a van with tinted windows.’

‘You seem to have rallied the disaffected masses in New York, protests seen on the streets, stones thrown at the Governor there, so your very brief visit may do some good. And it was … ten hours, end-to-end, your visit?’

‘Off the plane at 7am I think, and back on at 7pm, so maybe twelve hours if you include waiting around in airports.’

‘But you booked into a hotel…’

‘The original plan was to stay the night, but the second sitcom saw the trouble on the news and kindly asked me if I could shoot my walk-on with them … whilst I was still alive.’

‘A bit cheeky, but they had a point.’

‘I also met the Business Manager of the Kudulov Estate, so I did get some work done. But he had to walk to my hotel, traffic at a standstill and roadblocks everywhere. Still, I made him a coffee, so it wasn’t all bad.’

He cocked an eyebrow at me. ‘Will you go back?’

‘Yes, I may have some advertising work there.’

‘I think they want you to stay away…’

‘Tough. And they’re supposed to be tough New Yorkers, not pussies.’

‘You’ll certainly make friends there, not. So how go the huge funds that you manage?’

‘They’re all doing very well.’

‘Extremely well, so reported. And this new Barclays Fund?’

‘Have you been spying on me?’

‘It was in the Financial Times,’ he pointed out.
